ABOUT THE PROJECT
The Blackwall Tunnel, built in the Victorian era, was not designed to accommodate the high levels of traffic currently crossing the river. Incidents involving larger, unsuitable vehicles frequently result in delays and closures.
This congestion can quickly lead to tailbacks of several miles within just a few minutes, significantly increasing journey times. Drivers often find themselves either stuck in traffic or opting for longer alternative routes to avoid the tunnel, which also negatively impacts air quality.
In response to these issues, the decision was made to construct the Silvertown Tunnel, a 1.4 km road tunnel featuring two lanes in each direction and dedicated bus lanes. This extensive twin-bore structure, located under the Thames, has a diameter of 11.87 meters and is the largest Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) ever used in the UK. We take great pride in our involvement in this project since its early days in 2022, as we have provided both civil engineering and tunnelling personnel throughout its duration.
