World Environment Day 2019
The 5th June every year is World Environment Day, a day dedicated for encouraging awareness and action for the protection of our environment.
This years theme is beat air pollution, this is due to the fact 9 out of 10 people worldwide breathe polluted air. This causes 7 million premature deaths per year.
So what can you do daily to help the environment? see our tips below:
- Turn off your computer
If you aren’t going to be using your computer for longer than 20 minutes, turn off your monitor. If you won’t be using it for more than two hours, turn your computer off. Any electronics you have on but aren’t using use a lot of uneccasary energy.
- Save water throughout the day
Simply turn the tap off whilst you are brushing your teeth or lathering your hands and face with soap. Also washing clothes on a colder wash can save as much as 85% in energy as this is used to heat the water.
- Reduce plastic usage
Stop using plastic straws, plastic cups/bottles and stop using plastics bags. Bring a reusable bag when shopping or use a reusable cup or bottle when you can. Simply reusing materials like this can have a hug impact.
- Travelling responsibly
Although sometimes unavoidable, you can lower your environmental impact by travelling responsibly, walking or cycling when you can is a great way to start. If you are travelling longer distances, using public transport instead of driving can also be a benefit to the environment.
Everybody can help reduce pollution by putting items such as cans and bottles into different bins, as well as ensuring your household waste goes into the correct bins. If you work in an office ensure paper is recycled when possible. If an office building of 7,000 workers recycled all of its office paper waste for a year, it would be the equivalent of taking almost 400 cars off the road.
